4th Duo..of SDGS.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
Welcome to another duo of Substantial Development goals.
Sustainable Development Goals
Affordable and Clean Energy(SDG7):
"Powering the Future: Innovations and Opportunities for Sustainable Energy"
SDG 7 focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030. There has been significant progress made in recent years, but numerous challenges remain. Here is a brief overview of both the progress achieved so far and the challenges still faced.
Progress So Far:
1. Increase in Global Access to Electricity:
- From 2010 to 2020, the global electricity access rate increased from 83% to over 90%. This progress is especially notable in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, where millions of people have gained access to electricity.
- Example: India’s Saubhagya Scheme electrified millions of households, contributing significantly to the country’s energy access goals.
2. Expansion of Renewable Energy:
- Renewable energy sources, particularly solar, wind, and hydropower, are becoming more prominent. By 2021, renewable energy accounted for 29% of global electricity generation, with solar and wind leading the growth.
- Cost Reduction: The cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity has dropped by about 89% in the last decade, making it one of the most affordable energy sources today.
- Several countries are leading the way, including Germany and China, with massive investments in renewable energy.
Challenges to Achieving SDG 7:
Energy Access Gaps:
- Despite progress, 770 million people globally still lack access to electricity, with Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for three-quarters of this number.
- Achieving universal energy access by 2030 remains a major challenge, especially in conflict-affected regions and remote rural areas where infrastructure is lacking.
2. Reliance on Fossil Fuels:
- Fossil fuels still dominate the global energy mix, contributing to over 60% of the world’s electricity generation. This reliance hinders the transition to renewable energy and exacerbates climate change.
- Governments are finding it difficult to transition quickly away from coal, oil, and natural gas, particularly in regions heavily dependent on fossil fuels for jobs and revenue.
Decent Work and Economic Growth(SDG8):
"Building Inclusive Economies: Opportunities for Decent Work and Sustainable Growth"
SDG8 focuses on Increasing productivity, reducing unemployment (especially for youth and women), promoting labor rights, and ensuring sustainable economic growth that benefits everyone Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all by 2030.
Progress So Far:
1.Global Economic Growth:
- Global GDP has increased, with some regions showing strong economic growth, particularly in Asia and parts of Africa.
2. Job Creation:
- Progress in creating jobs, especially in industries like technology and services.
- Many countries have improved labor market policies to increase employment opportunities.
Challenges:
Youth Unemployment : High rates of youth unemployment, especially in developing regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
Informal Employment: A large portion of the global workforce remains in informal jobs, with no social protection or labor rights.
